THE MATURATION OF MIKE TYSON
On June 11, 2005 at the end of the sixth round, Mike Tyson told his handlers that he was not coming back out to finish
the bout with Kevin McBride. He explained to the press and his handlers that he had had enough with boxing and he did not
have the stomach for the sport anymore, Tyson admitted he was in it to pay bills, mainly taxes.
I am not going to pile on more criticism about Mike Tyson. He was the most controversial and compelling boxer since Muhammad
Ali. He did not stand for anything but himself, but now Mr. Tyson has finally submitted to a higher authority. One who may
be bigger than the Internal Revenue Services (IRS)?
Since Cus D’Amato recruited Mike Tyson to prizefight in his camp, Mike Tyson has live the thug, hip-hop, Big Willie
lifestyle. His light switch has been “ON” the whole time. Women, managers, casino owners, promoters, the entourage,
etc., all had interest in Tyson for one thing; using him for the money he can bring them. Mike was more intrigued with the
lifestyle and the money, he forgot that boxing was his profession and failed to realize his talent made him potentially the
greatest boxer ever, but he failed to improve his skills leading up to the Buster Douglas fight.
There were rumors that he spent more time with drugs and prostitutes than practicing his craft when he went to the Far
East to fight Douglas. After losing the fight by knockout, Mike Tyson was not the same fighter.
But as Mike Tyson fought with his demons, there were the angels in the background slowly fighting to bring Mike Tyson to
the land of the sane. There were the Black Muslims in prison, Monica Turner his ex-wife that Tyson remains friends with, Sugar
Ray Leonard and promoter Rock Newman.
Tyson tried to fight his demons during the troublesome years, but the forces of good stayed in his corner. They slowly
rescued him from the forces of evil.
As Mike Tyson tried his book of dirty tactics against Kevin McBride, each punishing blow by McBride help Tyson realize
that it is over for him and boxing. I believe that the forces of good won, finally. Mike Tyson submitted.
This is not a time of sadness for Mike Tyson but the beginning of new opportunities for Mike, if he continues to associate
with the Sugar Ray’s and the Rock Newman's of the world. He can still pay off his IRS bill; there are other ways he
can make money. There are movies, talk shows, the college lecture circuit, he can license his name to boxing camps, he can
teach boxing to executives and the stars, the list goes on and on. He will not have to take a punch.
Tyson’s quitting on the stool is a victory for those who have been trying to save him and change his lifestyle. I
am just one man but I believe Tyson is a very intelligent young man who will begin to enlighten himself and develop his children
into the model citizens. Using his life as an example for them.
On Saturday June 12, we did not witness a loser but the birth of the new Mike Tyson; it is time for a new, “Baddest
man on the planet!”.
Now we have a new “Baddest dad on the planet!” Mike Tyson the self-proclaimed, Mr. Mom.
Good Luck, Mike!
