ENHANCING YOUR BOXING CAREER: SPARRING PARTNER
The most frequent question asked on this website is how can I advance my boxing career? Most young boxers who are
not famous would like to advance into a prestigious fight stable with notable boxers, trainers and promoters they can learn
from.
Sparring partners are needed all the time in the boxing community and if you are versatile, have great fundamentals and
advance skill. You can go far in the world of pugilism. Being a sparring partner does not end with boxing. Wrestlers, kickboxers
and mixed martial artist can use skills of boxers and they can travel to different parts of the world offering their skill
as sparring partners also.
With the Internet, you can market yourself everywhere. You do not have to limit yourself to your town or region. Trainers,
owners and friends of pugilist can assist an aspiring combatant who is seeking to advance his or her career. You can assist
them in writing letters to promoters, trainers and clubs around the world. In many cases, your fighter may not be very savvy
in his marketing skills; some talented fighters may not have a formal education and will need your assistance.
Once you start marketing your service as a sparring partner, be sure you include your fight record, other sports you have
participated and the accomplishments you have made in those sports. Acknowledge your educational accomplishments and note
any certifications you have obtained. Let your future employers know your marital status. If you have a family, your future
employer may favor you because your marital status will show that you are working for your family as well as yourself. This
will give them an impression maturity, responsibility and stability.
You the fighter do not have to limit your skills to one kind of combat sport. Karate schools and mixed martial arts schools
are always looking to improve specific skills in their fighters. A mixed martial arts club may need the help of a boxer to
help their fighters improve in boxing skill and to help their fighters become durable. Mixed martial artists may need Ju Jitsu
or wrestling sparring partners to help them in their discipline with grappling and locking techniques.
Remember; approach this career as a sparring partner professionally. Keep your mind open to learn new techniques and approaches.
Learning as much as you can will make you marketable.
When asked to become part of a training stable, remember it is customary for the promoters to pay your expenses, such as
traveling, lodging and food. If they do not, make sure they pay you in advance and pay you weekly. Try to get one-week payment
in advance. Sparring partners generally earn $50.00 to $1,000.00 a day. Usually, the longer the training camp, the lesser
the daily rate. If the camp will not find lodging, pay for travel expenses, etc. Just add these expenses in your negotiation
for you training fee.
Once you start training, be cordial and obey the camp rules. Do not get into camp gossip or horseplay. Devote your time
into helping the fighters become better. Save all the other stuff for off-hours.
If you travel to other countries, try your best to learn how to speak the language. Learn the basics. Communications is
very important in relating to citizens of other countries. Learning their customs will help those citizens look at you in
a favorable light,
GOOD LUCK!
