WRESTLING-LADY WRESTLERS, SUPERSTARS AND SUPERWOMEN
In the United States, we have had so many professional athletes that have disappointed the public.
Mike Tyson (WBC boxer) and his psychotic behavior, Kobe Bryant (NBA Basketball player) alleged rape trial, Christian Laettner
(NBA player) and his drug problem, and the list goes on. The professional athlete at its highest levels can use poor judgment
at times and can be an embarrassment to his profession. While some of these elite athletes get in trouble with the law, the
public and their employers, while we the hard working Joes look at them like overgrown spoiled brats. But there is a group
of athletes in our society that is quietly setting good examples at all levels and sports writers do not give them credit
for their efforts...and that is the lady wrestler.
I read and viewed a lot of sports magazines and websites and the more I learn about female wrestling, the more amazed and
enlightened I am about them.
Lady wrestlers are a unique bunch of women. They often grow up as Tomboys, extremely shy persons or good athletes, who
crossed over from other sports they could not excel in. They grew up with their bothers enjoying sports. Most of them have
had martial arts training. They have known wrestlers on TV they admired.
Most lady wrestlers are dedicated professionals and money is not always the key to their motivation. The average lady wrestler
makes a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars for their matches. They mostly work in nightclubs. There are a few who
wrestle for small sanctioned organizations, but the overwhelming majority works in small clubs on the chittlin circuit. Some
perform exhibitions in county fairs against men and usually win.
Like most ladies, they have a tremendous thirst for knowledge and they never stop learning their craft. Lady wrestlers
marry. They have kids. They go to college. Some model. Some work in strip bars. Some hold government and corporate jobs. They
have masters and doctors degrees. A few are lawyers. They are often independent and negotiate their own contracts. They are
personal trainers. Lady wrestlers are more accessible to charitable activities than most other female athletes.
After all the things they juggle, they are still some of our countrys lowest paid athletes. Even the World Wrestling Entertainment
(WWE) lady wrestlers earn far less than their male counterparts. Despite this, they stay dedicated to their craft and continue
to amaze us.
When browsing the web, take a look at female wrestling websites. You will be amazed at how creative and inventive this
breed of women are.
