MULTIMEDIA-START YOUR OWN RADIO PROGRAM
No matter what discipline you are in, boxing or mixed martial arts, you can start you own radio program.
Contact the radio stations in your area. Call the program producers and propose to them your idea of starting a radio program
involving self-defense, fitness and nutrition. The public is very interested in sports and fitness. Do not be afraid of being
rejected. Send your proposal into the stations more than one time because radio stations are always changing formats and adding
new ideas, especially the lower ranked stations.
Submit your proposals at least once a year. Ask the program director in which part of the year they accept proposals for
new programming.
You may be a boxing instructor or martial arts teacher, but you have to be versatile. The audience is interested in some
self-defense but they are overwhelmingly interested in fitness. So intergrate nutrition facts and fitness with your boxing
or martial arts ideas. Add games and drills to make your ideas sound fun and exciting. Add ideas about starting fitness clubs
in their job or neighborhoods. Have the public write in questions about fitness, nutrition, martial arts or boxing. Having
them write in questions are better because you can receive them and prepare your answers instead of trying to answer them
off the top of your head in a live format. It reduces chances of you not sounding like an expert. The audience writing
in suggestions, questions and comments also gives you ideas to talk about.
You do not have to have a big radio program to be heard. To promote yourself and your gym, a few minutes spot can be enough
with the power of radio. At the end of the program, let the audience know how you can be reached. Give them your name, address,
telephone number, website address, and email address. It is important to have a website. So the audience can see you and your
club and any events that you club has planned.
Some of the easier stations to be accepted by are public supported stations, gospel stations, college, special interest
and all news stations at the lower end of the dial. The AM stations are more likely to accept your proposal than the FM stations.
Once a station accepts you, be flexible in your negotiations. Some stations may offer you a salary and some may not. Some
may offer you and your club a chance for exposure and free publicity. If so, take full advantage, you will be surprised at
the numbers of people that had heard you and who heard you, no matter how big or small the station is. You will definitely
receive emails and telephone calls which will be a big asset to the growth of your club and its reputation. Of course, this
will enable you to sign up new clientele.
Remember, just dont contact the radio stations you are familiar with, contact the stations in the cities close by and the
smaller towns in your metropolitan area. A radio show, whether it is a three minute spot or a thirty minute show will create
a voice for you that will attract attention, while adding personality to your publicity. Unlike an ad, your potential clientele
will be exposed to the depths of your knowledge. It is your personality that will bring them into your club. Give it a try!
Happy hunting and as always GOOD LUCK!
