Mr. Chad Gonzalez contacted me this month to tell me about his new professional boxing league, which
he is president.
"THE US BOXING LEAGUE (USBL)"
A unique new boxing league with franchises, teams, investors, and a draft for boxing talent for each team.
Mr Gonzalez informed me that fighters who wish to register for the draft can contact them via email for
an information and registration form. There will be tryouts held in cities across the United States.
The league is currently negotiating deals for the broadcast rights for 2008. If nothing is set in place
before the first fight of 2008, the USBL will broadcast every fight free of charge over the internet on Tivo and I-Tunes.
Chad Gonzalez has informed me that he has received a lot of press due to the fact that in a recent interview,
Mr. Gonzalez called out Dana White of the Utimate Fighting Championships (UFC). White claimed that mixed martial arts
(MMA) was superior to boxing. Chad replied that MMA has no skill and any truck driver in the US can compete in the
UFC.
Chad tried to prove his point by challenging Mr. White to a match in the Octagon. He would like to prove
that anyone can compete in the UFC.
From the USBL website Mr. Gonzalez adds...
THE USBL: A NEW VISION FOR BOXING.....
The United States Boxing League was designed to bring the sport of boxing back into the eyes of
sports fans from around the world. The USBL is re-energizing the sport by creating explosive shows while showcasing talented
and entertaining boxers. The USBL and our marketing campaigns are developed and designed to attract a new generation of boxing
fans. We are following the model of the “NFL” in hopes of solidifying the USBL as the premiere boxing league.
The United States Boxing League is a fifteen week season of boxing that features boxers, representing
different states, competing to become the USBL Champion. Boxing fans from across the United States are hailing the USBL as
the next sports franchise that will rival the “NFL” in popularity. Each USBL season consists of, pre-season,
regular season and post season. Pre-season consists of the Draft and the Draw. Each season a pool of boxers are assembled
to be eligible for the Draft. The Draft then allows state captains to select boxers that best represent the state they are
competing for. The Draw is a lottery system that decides which two boxers will compete and in what order they compete in.
The regular season for the USBL are the official weeks in which the tournament is taking place. Each season is formatted in
a fifteen week single elimination tournament. Post season is easily described as the championship event and the all-star event.
While developing the USBL, we discussed several different images for our league. Finally, we settled an a more
youthful underground image. We decided to look into nightclubs as a venue. We felt that the typical arena, just did not suit
the excitement we were looking for. It was in our mind, just too big. Seats were empty and the angles for the filming were
all wrong. It did not quite capture the fight like we wanted. We wanted to be drawn in the fight, not feel like we were being
kept at a distance. With the fights being held in the clubs, it gave the atmosphere a more exclusive feel. The energy levels
were a lot higher and it forced the cameras to get in there and film the action. It was everything we were looking for. The
underground look was first brought to our attention by a couple fans. They said it was more interesting to them because of
the excitement of the crowd at the fights. The music, the energy, it was all in place.
With MMA on the rise, the sport of boxing is feeling the pressure. Critics blame the fighters
and the fights, but we feel that it is the presentation and the image of the sport that is causing it to suffer. Fans want
to be entertained. They want to somehow relate to the sport. For me, one of the most exciting things in boxing is the build
up to the event. My anticipation grows from the interaction between the boxers only to be let down by an uneventful event
and poor show. The USBL is taking a look at what aspects of the sport can be revised or improved to better satisfy the
fans. Since we are aiming for a television presence, we have overhauled the whole filming process for each event. We have
come up with better ways to film each event so we can capture the fight while portraying the most energy possible. We have
team cheerleaders and the best possible artists that are helping direct the league toward the demographic we are looking
for. It’s a new generation of boxing for a new generation of boxing fans.
